For the past several years we have seen a few different dent repair kits on the market that claim you can POP out a dent quickly and easily without harming the painted finish on your vehicle. Well we have seen our fair share of DIY dent repairs gone horribly wrong.
When repairing the damaged, dented or creased metal on the body of your vehicle MAKE NO MISTAKE if you have not had proper training in metal repair you will do more harm than good. Several times we have had perspective clients come to the shop for estimates and asked us if we can repair an area on their car that they already “kind of fixed”. Whoa! the results are usually not repairable by the “Paintless Method” now that it has been basically turned inside out. If the dent you have on your vehicle is what we call a soft dent with no creasing or pit in the center of the deepest part of the damage one of these kits may have a positive result. $19.95 could cost a lot more after a repair is attempted. One gentleman could have spent our minimum charge of $75.00 and had a high quality dent repair done the hood of his custom painted Mercedes. He tried the dent repair kit and ruined not only the paint but also stretched the metal to a point we couldn’t do anything with it besides paint the hood and blend the fenders and then blend the doors because of the fancy color. $1600 later. Ouch!
The glue repair kits on the market today basically glue a tab on the dent and allow you to twist a knob that raises thedented area. You can easily over pull the panel and warp it. The paint on a vehicle should be inspected by a professional to make sure you do not pull off a big chunk of paint. All of the marketing and empty promises may leave you with a bigger problem than the dent you started out with. If it’s to good to be true it probably is.
